Symposium Topics

This symposium is aimed at honoring the scientific accomplishments of Dr. Geoffrey C. Clayton, who has had a lifetime of influence over the field of dust astrophysics. The symposium will consist of invited and contributed oral and poster talks on current research and future problems in dust astrophysics, and will cover the following topics:

  • Circumstellar and interstellar dust in the Local Group
  • The evolution of R Coronae Borealis stars
  • Binary white-dwarf mergers
  • Supernovae
  • Planetary nebulae
  • Extinction curves
  • Comparison of theory, simulations, and observations
  • Future problems: where do we go from here?

Conference and Reception Venues

The symposium will be held at University Memorial Center on the University of Colorado campus in Boulder, Colorado. At 5,430 feet above sea level, Boulder is at the base of the Rocky Mountain foothills; it enjoys 300 plus days of sunshine a year and moderate weather. Boulder hosts thriving tech and natural foods industries, supports a renowned entrepreneurial community, has some of the region's best restaurants, and is home to many federal research labs and a world-class university.

Registration fees: The early registration rate of $175 ($130 students) will run through April 30, 2019. Beginning May 1, 2019 through June 30, 2019, the full registration rate of $210 ($165 students) will be in effect. After July 1, only onsite registration will be available, with a fee of $260 ($210 students).

Guest Registration Fee, which covers the opening reception and the banquet, is $100.

The organizers may photograph some symposium events for later use, distribution, or archival activities, such as symposium reports, social media posts, etc. If attendees do not wish to be photographed or recorded by others (e.g., due to proprietary results), please notify the session chair. The organizers (Space Science Institute + parties listed below) do not accept liability for any personal accident, loss, or damage to private property which may be incurred as a result of participation in the symposium.

Travel & Lodging

Boulder is between a 35 minute to 1 hour (43.9-mile) drive from the Denver International Airport (DEN). Options for ground transportation to and from DEN airport are:

  • Rental cars. Parking is available for a fee in public garages throughout Boulder.
  • Regional Transportation District (RTD) buses. RTD SkyRide and AB bus lines travel to Boulder in approx. 1 hour, cost is $9-13 USD each way. Note: do NOT confuse with the University of Colorado A commuter rail line (this goes into Denver).
  • Shared-ride van services
  • Taxicabs and mobile app services.

    • Boulder has been named one of the most bike-friendly cities in the United States; bicycle rentals are available through Bcycle or University Bicycles.
